How do i update my ipod without loosing my media?

When i tried to update my ipod it says "there are purchased items on the iPod...that have not been transferred to your itunes library. You should transfer these items to your itunes library before updating this ipod. Are you sure you want to continue? What do i do? My music on my ipod is not on itunes because my computer crashed and i lost itunes.
